🟢 Hey neighbor 👋
A week where Bastrop County exhales and stands at attention
This week, the county does two things at once. On Thursday and Friday, six high school commencements walk seniors across stages in Bastrop, Cedar Creek, Smithville, Elgin, and at the Performing Arts Center on Cedar Street. On Monday, Memorial Day lands. The 24th Annual Bastrop Memorial Day Ceremony gathers at 10:00am at Fairview Cemetery, and American Legion Post 533 opens its doors at noon for a Memorial Day Ceremony, hot dogs, and hamburgers. In between, Puffs opens at the Bastrop Opera House on Friday night, Music in the Park returns to Veterans Memorial Park in Elgin, the Quilt Raffle drawing for Thelma's Square closes out the Stitched exhibit at the Bastrop County Museum, and the Bastrop Comedy Club at Film Alley brings in TV veteran Claude Stuart on Saturday night.
We are also featuring Volcano Sushi & Ramen this week, the family-run Japanese restaurant tucked into Burleson Crossing right next door to last week's featured spot. Sit-down sushi and a real bowl of tonkotsu in our backyard. We had to write about it.
Last week in Bastrop County: The Smithville Fly-In rolled aircraft onto the Crawford runway, La Cultura Market filled Veterans Memorial Park in Elgin, the Lost Pines Art Center hosted its Spring Gala in downtown Bastrop, and we spotlighted Tecuen (the Michoacán crepe shop in Burleson Crossing) and The Owl Wine Bar (the Elgin storefront built around a hidden 1901 cigar mural). Catch up here.
If you only do one thing this weekend, find a senior in your life and clap for them. If you can swing two, stand at Fairview at 10:00am on Monday and listen to the names. If you can swing three, take Mom or Dad or the neighbor who just walked their grandkid across a stage out for ramen.
Let's get into it. 🗓️
🟢 FEATURED EVENT | 24th Annual Bastrop Memorial Day Ceremony at Fairview Cemetery

There is a row of flags at Fairview Cemetery on Memorial Day morning that goes on longer than you think. Veterans of Bastrop County have been buried there since the 1800s, and on Monday, May 25, the Bastrop Veterans Day Car Show Weekend committee invites the whole community to gather at 10:00am for the 24th Annual Bastrop Memorial Day Ceremony.
It is quiet. It is short. It is the kind of thing you bring kids to. There is a reading of the names, a prayer, a rifle salute, and a final note from a bugler. You stand in the sun for about an hour. Bring water. Bring a hat. Bring a tissue, because you will need it.
After the cemetery, the morning rolls into a second tradition just a few miles away: American Legion Post 533 on Loop 150 opens its doors from 12:00pm to 2:00pm for a Memorial Day Ceremony followed by hot dogs and hamburgers off the grill. Everyone is welcome. It is the kind of post-ceremony fellowship that a small town does well, and a good way to talk to a veteran in your community who lived the story.
If you are new to Bastrop County, Texas, or if your kids have never been to a Memorial Day ceremony in person, this is the year. Memorial Day is not the start of summer. It is the day we remember the cost.
🗓️ Monday, May 25, 2026 | Ceremony 10:00am | Post 533 from 12:00pm - 2:00pm 📍 Fairview Cemetery, 700 Fayette St, Bastrop, Texas 📍 American Legion Post 533, 3003 Loop 150 E, Bastrop, Texas 💲 FREE | open to the public 🔗 American Legion Post 533 events 🔗 Bastrop TX Veterans Day Car Show Weekend
Two more flag-day moments to know about: Friday, May 22, is Poppy Day at Post 533, where Legionnaires hand out the red poppy pins that became the American Legion's national tribute back in 1924. And Saturday, May 23, at 8:00am, Post 533 hosts a Flag Replacement breakfast, prayer, and ride out to Fairview Cemetery to replace worn flags. Old flags come back to the post for a flag burning ceremony. All hands welcome. 🔗 Post 533 details

💎 COMMUNITY TREASURE | Volcano Sushi & Ramen, the Real Sushi-and-Tonkotsu Counter in Burleson Crossing

You can tell when a restaurant means it. You walk in and the room is calm, the rolls are tight, the broth has a sheen on top of it, and the staff lingers at your table like they want you to stay. That is Volcano Sushi & Ramen on Highway 71 in Bastrop, Texas.
Owners Daniel Luo and Alex Liu opened Volcano in November 2024 as their first restaurant, tucked into the Burleson Crossing Shopping Center between CareNow Urgent Care and DoubleDave's Pizzaworks, right next door to Tecuen (the Michoacán crepe shop we featured last week). Both owners worked in the Austin restaurant world before opening their own place, and they fell in love with Bastrop while doing so. They told Community Impact Newspaper in 2024 that they wanted Bastrop to be the first town where they put their name on the door.
The menu does what the name says. There is real sushi, cut for the people who know the difference between a tempura roll and a nigiri plate, and there is real ramen, with deep tonkotsu and shoyu broths that taste like a kitchen that respects the technique. There is also a small Chinese-style hot dish menu (orange chicken, kung pao bento boxes, mix veggie) for the family member who is not yet ready to do sushi for dinner. That is a kindness, and it is the right call for a small-town Japanese restaurant whose customers are still learning the lineup.
We are featuring Volcano this week because graduation weekend is a sit-down weekend. When Grandma flies in, when the cousins drive over from Houston, when the Class of 2026 picks a place that is not pizza, this is the place to know about. Bring the grad. Order the Sushi & Sashimi Combo for the table. Get a bowl of Tonkotsu Sho-yu Ramen. Walk out feeling like you ate at a real Japanese restaurant without driving to Austin. If ramen isn’t your fav then order the Singapore Noodles with extra curry! I can’t resist ordering it every time I go!
Order this
🍣 Sushi & Sashimi Combo | the showpiece. A clean cut of fish, rice that is the right temperature, and a presentation that earns its own photo 🍜 Tonkotsu Sho-yu Ramen | the rich pork-bone broth that sushi-only spots almost never bother with 🍜 Mi-so Tonkotsu Ramen | the deeper, slightly sweeter cousin of the Sho-yu 🍤 Tempura Vegetable Appetizer | a generous tempura plate for the table 🥡 Kung Pao Bento Box | for the kids or the cousin who is not eating raw fish tonight. Or order MY favorite… the Singapore Noodles with extra curry!

📚 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT | Puffs Opens This Weekend at Bastrop Opera House

This Friday, May 22, the Bastrop Opera House raises the curtain on Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, a fast, funny, heartfelt retelling of seven magical years at a famous wizarding school, but told from the perspective of the underdog house: the lovable, loyal Puffs.
