Hey neighbor 👋
A Mother's Day weekend that earned its keep
This week, Mother's Day puts a tender thumb on the calendar. On Saturday, the Community Gardens off Hwy 71 turns into a Mother's Day pop-up market and a hands-on flower bar where you build Mom a bouquet with your own hands. On Sunday, the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines sets out a brunch with a chocolate fountain and a glass of champagne for every mom. And at sunrise that same morning, hundreds of runners and walkers head into Bastrop State Park for the Wildflower Trail Run, where every mom finisher takes home a bonus medal.
Around all that, downtown Bastrop hosts the next F.A.M.E. Days Nest Fest on Spring Street, the 20th Annual Smithville Fly-In parks aircraft right on the Crawford runway for the public, Elgin Music in the Park fills Veterans Memorial Park on Friday night, and Friday is bird-walk Friday with the Little Hikes for Birding series. Three school districts also hand out senior awards and academic honors this week.
If you only do one thing this weekend, make it Sunday brunch with Mom. If you can swing two, add Saturday's flower bar.
Last week in Bastrop County: Quilts hung in the breeze at Calvary Episcopal and the Bastrop County Museum for the first Airing of the Quilts, the Lost Pines Art Center crowned Bastrop a Bird City at Painted Wings BirdFest, and the American Legion Riders pulled in for their three-day Texas State Rally. Catch up here.
Let's get into it. 🗓️
🟢 FEATURED EVENT | Build Mom a Bouquet at the Community Gardens Flower Bar

There is a particular kind of magic in handing your mom flowers you arranged yourself. On Saturday, May 9, the Community Gardens off Highway 71 in Bastrop, Texas turns into a Mother's Day pop-up market and a hands-on Flower Bar Experience where you do exactly that.
The market runs all day, indoors and out, with local makers, vendors, and the nursery's own plants on display. The flower bar is the heart of it: a curated table of fresh seasonal blooms, a vase, and a friendly walk-through so anyone, including kids and the no-experience-needed crowd, can build a bouquet that looks like it came out of a downtown shop. You can come for one or both. You will likely come for both.
If you grew up watching your mom water her own porch pots every spring, this is the event for you. If you have small kids who want to "make Mom a present" with their own hands, this is the event for you. And if you are a mom who would honestly rather do this herself with a friend on a Saturday morning, this is the event for you too.
🗓️ Saturday, May 9, 2026 | 10:00am - 4:00pm 📍 Community Gardens, 1067 Hwy 71 W, Bastrop, Texas 💲 Free admission to the market | Flower Bar Experience ticketed separately 🔗 Mother's Day Pop-Up details 🔗 Flower Bar Experience signup
💎 COMMUNITY TREASURE | Community Gardens Bastrop, the Place That Keeps Reinventing Itself

If you drive west out of downtown Bastrop on Highway 71 and keep your eyes on the south frontage, you will spot a hand-painted wooden sign for Community Gardens. Eight acres, near Sames Ford. Pull in and you will find a working plant nursery, a sit-down Mexican restaurant, a coffee shop with house-made gelato, a backyard playscape for the kids, a chicken coop, an aquaponics demo, and an open lawn that turns into a market or a workshop space depending on the weekend.
It is the closest thing Bastrop County, Texas has to a small-town village square, and that is by design. Community Gardens is family-owned and family-run, and the operators have spent the last decade building it as a place where local businesses can launch, get their footing, and grow. Some stay. Some move on. Some come back. The lineup on the property changes more than once a year, but the spirit of the place stays the same: come for the plants, stay for whoever is cooking, leave with something growing in your hands.
If you have been around Bastrop County, Texas a while, you have watched Community Gardens evolve. The family that runs the place keeps planting and replanting, and the businesses that are there right now (Chapala, Cafè Aroma, the nursery itself) have all hit their stride. If you have not been out in a few months, it is a different place, and worth the visit.
We are featuring Community Gardens this week because Mother's Day weekend is the perfect moment to walk the property: market, flower bar, brunch at Chapala, espresso at Cafè Aroma, a tomato plant for the porch on the way home.
Who is on the property right now (May 2026)

🌶️ Chapala Fiestas & Grill | Bastrop's newest full Mexican restaurant and bar, open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Owner Sylvia Barragan opened in summer 2024 in the former Heroes space and has built a loyal local following. Latin Night nights are worth the trip on their own. 🔗 chapalafiestas.com
☕ Cafè Aroma | espresso, scratch-made gelato, fresh pastries, and a quiet shared workspace program for anyone who needs a few hours away from the house. Open Tuesday through Sunday. Closed Mondays. 🔗 cafearomabastrop.com
🌧️ Connection Center partners | the trades side of the property hosts pool and landscape design + build (Gray Lang is the newest), pest control, solar, and HVAC. Less retail, more "I need to talk to a real person about my back yard." 🔗 cgbastrop.com
Mother's Day weekend at the Gardens
This Saturday, May 9, the property hosts the Mother's Day Pop-Up Show (10am - 4pm) and the Mother's Day Flower Bar Experience workshop, where you and Mom build a fresh-bloom bouquet by hand with a vase to take home (see Featured Event above). It is the kind of slow Saturday that makes you remember why you live here.
🗓️ Open Mon-Sat 9am - 5pm | Sun 10am - 5pm 📍 1067 Hwy 71 W, Bastrop, Texas 📞 512-549-3555 🔗 cgbastrop.com | Public events calendar
